Column about Mario Savio brought back memories

I am writing in regards to Susan Mines’ How It Is column in the Lifestyles section (“A hero to those who remember, a gray-haired math professor to those who don’t,” Sept. 10) about Mario Savio.

In the fall of 1960, I enrolled in chemical engineering at Manhattan College, located in a lovely setting in northwestern Bronx, an area known as Fieldston. Most of the students commuted daily from New York City, Long Island, Westchester and New Jersey.

We freshmen out-of-towners boarded in a dormitory that had engineers on third floor and science guys (no women then) on second floor.

I noticed that many late afternoons before heading to dinner, there was an enclave in the dorm’s second floor entry area where the science guys were collaborating on solving assigned calculus problems. One science student, a tall guy, was explaining the logic and the approach. He could do the problems and explain them. That was Mario Savio.

He didn’t stay at Manhattan for long; why, I have no idea.

I took a job with Chevron in the Bay Area in 1965. That’s when I saw Mario on TV, rallying University of California at Berkeley students.

It truly is a small world.

Jaspers Jotting will be very “thin” this week.

Dorothy Sweeney, Mother of Peter K. (MC1964), and my beloved Aunt, passed away this week.

She was my “Momma Diddy” who took care of me while my single Mom went to work after my Father abandoned her. 

Recently, my fiancée has had full custody of her grandson since his release from the hospital in June 2017 after being weaned off narcotics at birth.

This little boy, Daniel, has taught me what it means to care for a baby. And especially someone else’s baby.  

Her passing drove home what Momma Diddy, and my other maiden Aunt Patty, did for me and my Mom.  

It’s another death in my life that makes me sad from All Souls Day to Saint Patrick’s Day, during which it seems all the significant people in my life passed on. 

Makes me root for March 17th to come quickly.

The only bright light was that I met my Classmate Deacon Keith Casey (MC1968) who led the prayers at the wake and assisted at the Funeral Mass.

So with my apologies, because of this, my ongoing chores with Baby Daniel, and my new responsibilities as “bar manager” at American Legion Post #401 148 Major Road Monmouth Junction NJ 08810, I haven’t had time to “do” Jasper Jottings correctly.

Good Evening All,

Peter Sweeney has shared the sad news of the passing of his Mom. Mrs. Dorothy B. Sweeney was called home on Sunday, November 4, 2018. This Grand Lady was just two weeks shy of her 98 Birthday and lived fully throught all her years. Peter, Dianne, Anne Marie, Peter and Dianne’ Grand Sons, Connor and Liam had visited with Mrs. Sweeney the morning before her passing and as Peter had said some months ago, he wanted his Mom’s last days and memories to be of peace, caring and knowing that she was loved. She was called home peacefully and there is no doubt that she is at peace in God’s Eternal Embrace in the Kingdom of Heaven. I will share further information as I receive
it.

Good Evening All,

We need to raise the volume for this good man for whom Pete Sweeney asks for our prayers. In August of 2014, we had Edmund Donovan, now just 49 years old, in our prayers for a heart condition that had to be addressed at that time. Peter noted that at the time, the heart problem was just one of the health issues that Ed and his Family were dealing with. Ed has been battling Brain Lesions for over ten years. The Doctors have been able to remove some of the lesions but not all which has left Ed with constant pain and vision issues besides his suffering from High Blood Pressure.

Today, Peter received an email from, as Peter says, his understandingly shaken Classmate, 1964, Andrew Joyce. Andrew is Ed’s Father-in-Law, Andrew is married to Peters’ First Cousin, Cathy and their Daughter, Valerie is Peter’s God Child and Ed’s Wife.

Sadly, Ed needs our prayers today more than ever. Below is Andrew’s email to Peter this morning.

” Edmund has been in Robert Wood Johnson New Brunswick for a week now. He was placed in ICU last night. He has fluid, “bleeding?” on his spinal chord. Physicians  believe it is somehow related to brain surgeries of many years ago when they did remove several bleeders but left others due to extreme risk involved.”

” He has some mobility issues on the left side.. To complicate matters, Edmund now has pneumonia. Oh boy!! He will need extensive rehab. They have tabled a “gamma knife” procedure due to risk it would leave him a quadriplegic. I’ll keep you updated as best I can. This is way over my head. “

” Please pray for everyone involved here. What can I say? Devastating news. He is only 49!!! “

Please  raise the volume for Ed, his Wife, Valerie, Andrew, Cathy, Peter and their  Families during this very difficult time. We pray that the hand of God guides the Doctors care and decisions. We pray that Ed’s pain may be lessened. We pray that Ed, Valerie and their Family feel God’s love, healing and strength  throughout  this so difficult time. Thank you Peter. Thank you all. John Reinke has shared news from Pete Sweeney about his Dad.

Thursday night he was increasingly disoriented and did not bounce back early on Friday.  We had him taken to the hospital for a another workup.  Result is again hypothermia but this time there is no medication to point to since we stopped the Losartan a week ago.  Warming blanket restored body temperature but his systems no longer are able to self regulate body temperature.  Cat scan, blood work etc are normal but prognosis is not good.  We will be heading to the hospital once care giver gets here for Mom around 10 15:am.

Will advise further during the day.

Please keep Mr. Sweeney and they Sweeney Family in your prayers as we pray that the MDs get Mr. Sweeney stabilized with no further complication. Please keep the volume up for this good man. Thank you. God Bless.

We pray for John, his Wife of 74 years, Dorothy and their Family. This good man, a United States Army WW11 Veteran, will be missed by so many whose lives he touched right up to the end of his journey. A truly steadfast member of the Greatest Generation, a loving husband, a loving Father and a friend to so many. It speaks of his devotion when his almost final concern was for his wonderful Wife, Dorothy. He is at peace in God’s Eternal and Loving Embrace. As expected, Pop was admitted to Centra State Medical Center and is having trouble regulating his body temperature.  Chest X-ray shows some water which (best case) may be start of pneumonia or (worst case) a first sign of body system breakdown.  Cat scan shows brain changes consistent with his advanced age but no indication of mini strokes.  Blood work is normal.

He is on intravenous antibiotics and was able to eat a little tonight.  Also exhibited some drive to survive and responded in focused manner to doctor questions which was a plus compared to last two or three days.
Dianne & I are staying overnight at 2 Manor Drive tonight to keep watch on my mother.  Hopefully, a few days away from the stress of keeping up with her will lead to a rebound in Pop’s health.  If he doesn’t rally, MD said she will allow him to go home rather than to a nursing home.   Assisted living is out of the question given level of day to day medical attention he requires.

James Procopio receives medals in ceremony at congressman’s office

When it came time for James Procopio to graduate from Manhattan College in 1964, he had three options: join the military, get married or move to Canada. He picked the first of the three, choosing to enlist in the U.S. Air Force right out of school.

The 74-year-old man served and was honorably discharged, but he never received his awards, medals or ribbons.

He was due an Air Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

“I explained that I wasn’t sure what happened to (the awards),” said Procopio, who was born and raised in Staten Island, N.Y.

He was able to get the awards after he made a call to the office of U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, R-Gainesville, in May. Procopio received them in a ceremony at Collins’ office on Monday morning.

Procopio’s daughter who lives in Orlando, Fla., Kerry McGavin, her husband Jon McGavin and their three boys Jackson, 13, Collin, 11, and Hudson, 8, were all there to support him, as well as Procopio’s son Drew Procopio. Procopio’s other son, Scott Procopio, wasn’t able to attend the medal-giving.

Col. Jim Martin, a longtime friend of Procopio’s, also came.

During the Vietnam War, Procopio flew planes from his base in Charleston, S.C., to wherever the soldiers were at the time, a 20,000-mile round trip that he took two or three times a month.

“Someone was looking out for me (out there),” Procopio said. He would get a 24-hour notification that he would be taking an “eastbound trip,” which was Air Force lingo for Vietnam. He would fly from Charleston to Alaska to Japan and then to Vietnam, usually. Sometimes they would have to pick up troops or goods in various places in the U.S. before heading off.

He would bring troops what they needed, including flying a planeload full of toilet paper once, he said. When he would bring the goods, he was often called a garbage hauler.

More solemnly, Procopio said he also flew the dead and wounded back.

“They didn’t dare call us garbage haulers, then,” Procopio said through a few tears. The soldiers he carried back home were “the real heroes,” he said.

Palettes of four of five coffins, which were usually six deep, were loaded onto his planes by forklifts.

“It freaked me out … it was disrespectful,” Procopio said.

Since then, however, Procopio worked as a security officer on a cruise ship and was able to take his wife to 103 countries.

“You made up for it,” Patty Procopio said to her husband.

For those who saw the football game on Monday.

We missed this view.

Those who attended the game said it was extremely emotional to see the entire bowl of the stadium turn red, white and blue. It took 90 workers two weeks to get all of the colored card boards mounted under each seat.  Each piece of card board had eye slits in them so the fans could hold up the colored sheet and still see through the eye slits.  Every seat had to have the proper card, with no mistakes, to make this happen.

This is what ESPN failed to show you Monday night.  Apparently, they thought their commercials were more important than showing this scene for about 5seconds.

 The chairs were sold through the alumni office and perhaps through the bookstore in the 60s and 70s. Two armchairs and a rocker were in the alumni director’s office when I was assistant director and later director of alumni relations from 1967-72. They were not rare and I believe there were some in other campus locations, possibly admissions and the President’s Office. I am not aware of them having been numbered, perhaps under the chair seat, but I doubt they would have been marked by hand.

MANHATTAN COLLEGE DEDICATES NEW CHAPEL WINDOWS DEPICTING LIFE OF JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE

Manhattan College officially dedicated a 20th century collection of stained glass windows depicting The Life and Work of Saint John Baptist de La Salle on Thursday, April 7.

Brother Gustavo Ramírez Barba, FSC, Ed.D., received an honorary doctorate of pedagogy degree at the event. Br. Gustavo is the General Councilor for Lasallian Higher Education at the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He is one of seven General Councilors who “have as their mission to strengthen communion and interdependence in the Institute.” He has served as the executive secretary for the Lasallian Latin American Region and as a regional director for the Mexican and Central American Universities of the International Association of Lasallian Universities.

The De La Salle windows were created in the early 1900s by the renowned French workshop of L. Mazuet et fils of Bayeux. L. Mazuet et fils was founded in 1858, and both father, Leon-Louis, and son, Henri, were students of the Christian Brothers in the late 1800s. Their work can be admired in the ancient churches and magnificent cathedrals of France, including Eglise Notre-Dame et Saint-Marcouf in Basse-Normandie.

The windows were originally installed at the Christian Brothers’ Novitiate in Pocantico Hills, New York, and were moved to the chapel of the Brothers’ Novitiate in Barrytown, New York in 1930. They were reacquired in 2015, through the joint effort of Manhattan College and the District of Eastern North America of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. After a yearlong process of restoration by Rohlf’s Stained and Leaded Glass Studio, they were installed in Manhattan College’s Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers in early 2016, and were dedicated on April 7 – the Feast Day of Saint John Baptist de La Salle.
